A birthday card is a card with illustrations and contains a special message for the celebrator. The card usually comes with an envelope. Birthday cards show messages related to the work place, family life, spiritual life, cultural influences, positive outlook on aging and more. There are special cards that do not have messages written inside, allowing people to write their own message.
Though greeting cards have been around for something like six centuries, the custom of giving birthday cards is probably more recent. The concept of adhering to a calendar birthday developed alongside the finalization of the western calendar itself and while gifts were given on birthdays, the concept of a birthday card came about only in the last century. With the advent of printing, in the USA, a poor German migrant started a printing-business in Boston and he began to turn out Christmas cards. Later, the card giving custom began to include special events in the lives of people, including birthdays.
When people first started sending birthday cards, they would never have imaged how far the cards would evolve or what the subject matter would diversify out to. The first birthday cards that were sent never mentioned or displayed the age of the recipient.
Nowadays, birthday cards, or any other greeting cards are no longer limited to physical cards. E-cards are great alternatives and are increasing in popularity. As long as the sender has an internet connection, he has free access to e-cards, anytime, anywhere.
Today there are many card styles to choose from, catering for almost every age range, gender and taste. Many people want the card to say how much they love them or to wish them good luck in the coming year.
It is widely accepted that birthday cards originated in England more than a century ago. Unfortunately there is no evidence of who sent the very first card and nobody knows the identity of the person who received that very first card.
